New place, new rituals

We have this new ritual which involves collecting palm fronds

We watch the moonrise

And then light the fire and just sit and stare at it (It is pitch dark out - the stupid flash insisted on going off and lighting up the scene)

I, of course, take this opportunity to look for food (some things never change)

We were out for a Jeep r-i-d-e and we were hearing a rattle. The rattle got pretty bad so Daddy took us back home right quick, popped the hood and it seems there was a problem, the water pump.

It's a 1964 Alumacraft, and they also have the original engine besides the little Mercury that's on it.

Apparently it's not just a boat, it's a project. Daddy started futzing with it right away and called out for his Buss-istant.

The windows are a great height for a short guy like me - unlike the old place where I couldn't see out the front AT ALL.

So we had a rental to replace my truck and I fell in LOVE with it

But in the life of a rental car relationships are short lived and it left me

Daddy somehow tricked Mommy into having the Jeep fixed - I mean Mommy and Daddy decided to have the Jeep fixed so we can drive it

Daddy and Mommy and I took the Jeep to the beach and look what we saw on the way!!!! Except for the big smile, these 2 look like twins!

Hey guys, sad news here at Bussie's house. The other nite I was in the back of the house in the TV room watching some TV with Daddy. Mommy was in the big bed in the front of the house reading and listening to some tunes when she heard trucks outside. After a bit she realized they were sitting out in front of our house she peeked out the window but couldn't really see anything. So she got up and poked her nosy head out the front door and saw 2 fire trucks sitting there running with their lights on. She kinda freaked because she figured our neighbor had had a heart attack again - so she stuck her head out further and realized there were a bunch of firemen standing in front of our driveway - so she stuck out even further and realized they were holding hoses!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So she freaked out and yelled for Daddy and they went out way at the other end of the house into the garage and opened the garage door to see ------ the firemen hosing down our now burned out truck.

Sigh I have such fond memories of r-i-d-i-n-g in my t-r-u-c-k

How could this happen?!?!?!?! My Mom wants me to warn anybody out there with a Ford F150 Truck - this was caused by the cruise control stuff under the hood. It caused an electrical fire that burned my poor friend beyond recognition. There is no hood left - it melted. Some of the window glass actually melted down the sides of the truck. The front tires melted off and the rims even melted a little. If you own a Ford F150 truck click here to see if your truck has an outstanding recall for this problem.

We were lucky me and my Mommy weren't going for a r-i-d-e when this happened!!!!!!

Saturday adventures!!!!

We went out for a t-r-u-c-k-r-i-d-e this morning - and we did not get back until 3 in the afternoon!

Here's me enjoying my r-i-d-e, come with and let's have fun!

Ears flappin in the wind, singing and yapping!

We went to a car show at the Harley Davidson dealer in Stuart Florida.

They had a lot of real neat old cars we looked at, one even had an old dog in it!

We hit a coupla beach parks in Jupiter - this is the one you see if you click on my Bussie Beach Cam link

They had to build up the sand because of bad beach erosion we had with an early spring storm in 2008.

Here we are coming up to the end where Jupiter Inlet is - it is one of the main inlets that takes you out from the Intracoastal Waterway to the Atlantic Ocean.

Across the inlet you can see the Jupiter Beach Club, it's private and they don't allow dogs like us.

Then we drove through Dubois Park - you get a real nice view of the historic Jupiter Light House from here.

They also have Bathtub Beach in this park, the tide is low there is usually more water in it.

It's nice and protected here and safe for kids n stuff so Daddy likes to come here and look at all the hot mommies.

Hahahahaha I just got Daddy in trouble!

Well, I hope you guys had as much fun as I did!

Double Snake-eyes, the big one one - eleven.

We went for a long truck r-i-d-e today to celebrate. All the way to the Jeep dealer! I was so excited in the parking lot I ran all around trying to pick which Jeep to go for a r-i-d-e in. No pix of the event, sorry!

Then we were headed back home on US Highway 1 in Stuart Florida and we saw this....

It came up behind us and the rents got all excited

Got me excited too. It was so loud I barked at it!

Then when we got home it was more surprises!

Here in the Bussie house, we had our own little glitch....a glitch named Buster. A furball who needed a haircut before his holiday pics could be taken. So Daddy took things into his own hands - literally - and gave me a cut. Not exactly salon styling as it was his first time using clippers and, as we all know, I fight to the death when being groomed. Well, I don't know how I look because they have covered up all the mirrors in the house. And Mommy is making cute wire fox terrier drawings for my holiday greetings.

I went for a truck ride to the bank last week. We go through the Drive Through so I get my bank cookie. It is sad that I must report that the international banking crisis has hit home. Bankatlantic gave me half a cookie.

Yesterday we went to the drive through at Bank of America. Same thing. HALF A COOKIE!

I was just wondering, seeing as how so many Bloggie Doggies seem to be running for President this year, and we have never had a canine in high office before, how might it work in the White House?

Would the President only be allowed to pee in the Yellow Room so he would not stain the carpets?

Would the President's you-mans be considered the Presidential Pets?

When meeting with Heads of State from other countries, would the President be told to get down if he jumped up on the visiting dignitaries?

Would the President be allowed on the furniture?

At State dinners, would everybody be served on the floor in doggie bowls?

When flying on Air Force One, would the President be required to be in a dog carrier under the seat?

To revisit the formal greetings, when standing in a receiving line, would the President be allowed to perform the leg hump hello?

Would the Secret Service "men" be specially trained Airedales and German Sheperds?

We are heading into uncharted waters here. Mind boggling!

elections again

My Mom was oh so happy she got to vote for Hillary today. Lil 'splainin' to do here.

We live in Jupiter, a tiny little hamlet in the northernmost reaches of Palm Beach County, Florida. My Mom loves pollyticks and is a card carrying Demoncrat. Fade back to the year 2000......

Mom was vice chair of Gore2000 for Palm Beach County. She organized events, she coordinated volunteers up here in the far reaches, she walked precincts, she sang the songs, she walked the walk. And she made plenty of phone calls! I, the good Dog-ocrat that I am, walked quite a few precincts with her.

Move forward to the night before election 2000 - Mommy was at a beachside rally in South Beach. Al Gore was there, along with Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sampora, Stevie Wonder, Robert DeNiro and lots of others! She was singing along, and dancing, and clapping to the speeches....She didn't get back home til after 4 am!!!!!! Then she had to be out at 6 am putting up Gore2000 signs outside polling places, then handing out literature at polling places - so she was really tired by the time she went to vote.

Bleary eyed she poured over the ballot - there was A LOT to vote for and tons of long squooshy writing. Well, she thinks she voted for Pat Buchanan by accident.

So, she got to vote, but the next day lots of stuff happened here and I didn't see much of her for weeks after that. Something about recounts and lawyers and protests. And she still wonders - even though she voted she can't be sure her vote counted.

Move on to Election 2004. Mommy had dropped out of pollyticks but someone piqued her interest. Not one to hang back, she ended up being the Palm Beach County coordinator for General Clark's presidential campaign. Here we go again; meetings, speeches, phone calls, organizing. Even a trip to Charleston South Carolina to walk precincts and hand out literature right before their primary.

Well, poor Mommy didn't get a chance to vote in Florida's primary, because Florida didn't have one that year. The candidate was decided before our primary date.

This brings us up to today. Mommy is REALLY so not involved in pollyticks anymore. She did get a chance to vote this time, and voted for HILLARY as every woman should. But you see her vote, once again, won't count. Florida has been stripped of their delegates at the Demoncratic Convention. Why? Because they moved their primary up so their votes WOULD count this time.

Florida is one of the 4 largest states in delegate/vote counts in the country. My Mom really does deserve the chance to help decide things around here. So I think, yes I am a dog capable of reason, that FLORIDA'S VOTES NEED TO COUNT!!!!

Gator in the lake!

This picture was taken by a Trauma Hawk( Para med helicopter for Palm Beach County, Florida hospitals) helicopter flying over Lake Worth (For those of you who are not local, Lake Worth is near West Palm Beach , Fl. and just 30 minutes away from the Bussie House!)

That has to be a HUGE gator to have a whole deer in its mouth!

The alligator was found near Forest Hill Blvd and the Florida Turnpike ... near a house , Game Wardens were forced to shoot the alligator- guess he wouldn't cooperate. Jayne and Don Hobkirk could hear the bellowing in the night. Their neighbors had been telling them that they had seen a mammoth alligator in the Lake that runs behind their house, but they dismissed the stories as being exaggerations.
'I didn't believe it,' Don Hobkirk said. Friday they realized the stories were, if anything, understated. Florida Game and Parks game wardens had to shoot the beast ...

Joe Goff, 6' 5' tall, a game warden with the Florida Game and Parks Commission, walks past the 23-foot, one inch alligator that he shot and killed in the back yard of Jayne & Don Hobkirk...

I have company arriving in three hours, and my current plan is to 1. put up a tent over said carcass and 2. hang thousands of fly strips inside it. This has been going on since about 6:40 this morning.

Anne V - 01:31pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1323 of 1332) Elk. Elk are very big this year, because of the rain and good grazing and so forth. They aren't rolling. They are alternately napping and eating. They each have a ribcage. Other dogs are working on them from the outside. It's all way too primal in my yard right now. We tried the hose trick. At someone elses house, which is where they climbed in and began to refuse to come out. Many hours ago. I think that the hose mostly helps keep them cool and dislodges little moist snacks for them. hose failed. My new hope is that if they all continue to eat at this rate, they will be finished before the houseguests arrive. The very urban houseguests. Oh, god - I know it's funny. It's appalling, and funny, and completely entirely representative of life with dogs.

If you stand the ribcage on end they scramble to the top and look out, all red. Otherwise, you kinda have to get in there a little bit yourself to really see them. And then, Gus Pong (who is coming to us, live, unamplified and with a terrific reverb which is making me a little dizzy) really doesn't mind water, but hates to be cold. Or soapy. And both of them can really run. Sprints of up to 35 mph have been clocked. So. If ever they come out, catching them and returning them to a condition where they can be considered house pets is not going to be, shall we say, pleasant.

ChristiPeters - 02:37pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1337 of 1356) Yikes! My sympathy! When I lived in New Mexico, my best friend's dog (the escape artist) was continually bringing home road kill. When there was no road kill convenient, he would visit the neighbor's house. Said neighbor slaughtered his own beef. The dog found all kinds of impossibly gross toys in the neighbor's trash pit. I have always had medium to large dogs. The smallest dog I ever had was a mutt from the SPCA who matured out at just above knee high and about 55 pounds. Our current dog (daughter's choice) is a Pomeranian. A very small Pomeranian. She's 8 months old now and not quite 4 pounds. I'm afraid I'll break her.

My part in the whole thing was to get really stressed about a meeting that I had to go to, and say *yeah, ok, whatever* when it was suggested that the ribcages, since we couldn't get the dogs out of them and the dogs couldn't be left there, be brought to my house. Because, you know - I just thought they would get bored of it sooner or later. But it appears to be later, in the misty uncertain future, that they will get bored. Now, they are still interested. And very loud, one singing, one snoring.

Anne V - 03:15pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1347 of 1356) I'll tell you the thing that is causing me to lose it again and again, and then I have to go back outside and stay there for a while. After the meeting, I said to my (extraordinary) boss, "look, I've gotta go home for the rest of the day, I think. Jake and Gus Pong are inside some elk ribcages, and my dad is coming tonight, so I've got to get them out somehow." And he said, pale and huge-eyed, "Annie, how did you explain the elk to the clients?" The poor, poor man thought I had the carcasses brought to work with me. For some reason, I find this deeply funny. (weekend pause)

Anne V - 08:37am Sep 13, 1999 PDT (# 1395 of 1405) So what we did was put the ribcages (containing dogs) on tarps and drag them around to the side yard, where I figured they would at least be harder to see, and then opened my bedroom window so that the dogs could let me know when they were ready to be plunged into a de-elking solution and let in the house. Then I went to the airport. Came home, no visible elk, no visible dogs. Peeked around the shrubs, and there they were, still in the elk. By this time, they had gnawed out some little portholes between some of the ribs, and you got the occasional very frightening glimpse of something moving around in there if you watched long enough. After a lot of agonizing, I went to bed. I closed the back door, made sure my window was open, talked to the dogs out of it until I as sure they knew it was open, and then I fell asleep. Sometimes, sleep is a mistake, no matter how tired you are. And especially if you are very very tired, and some of your dogs are outside, inside some elks. Because when you are that tired, you sleep through bumping kind of noises, or you kind of think that it's just the house guests. It wasn't the house guests. It was my dogs, having an attack of teamwork unprecedented in our domestic history. When I finally woke all the way up, it was to a horrible vision. Somehow, 3 dogs with a combined weight of about 90 pounds, managed to hoist one of the ribcages (the meatier one, of course) up 3 feet to rest on top of the swamp cooler outside the window, and push out the screen. What woke me was Gus Pong, howling in frustration from inside the ribcage, very close to my head, combined with feverish little grunts from Jake, who was standing on the nightstand, bracing himself against the curtains with remarkably bloody little feet. Here are some things I have learned, this Rosh Hashanah weekend: 1. almond milk removes elk blood from curtains and pillowcases, 2. We can all exercise superhuman strength when it comes to getting elk carcasses out of our yard, 3. The sight of elk ribcages hurtling over the fence really frightens the nice deputy sheriff who lives across the street, and 4. the dogs can pop the screens out of the windows, without damaging them, from either side.

Can't believe none of the Basenji lists have found it yet. They will tonight!!! Maybe they have and haven't passed it on because it is too much like "just another day with a Basenji" type thing. Only thing I wonder about at this point, was there one or two ribcages? Sometimes it seemed like she was infering each dog had its own cage.

I have had Basenjis for 26 years and this has to be one of the funniest stories I have every read with regard to this wonderful unique breed. During the past 28 years I have seen them do some near impossible things. It reminds me of an incident from those long-ago days when I was very new to basenjis and had yet to learn of their exploits. I have a thanksgiving story from the early 70s when I first had basenjis. After dinner when we were all sitting around groaning in the living room, we heard some odd thumps coming from the kitchen. One of the basenjis had stuck his head inside the turkey carcase and was being "helped" by 2 other basenjis who were trying to pull bits off the outside. He was not trying to get the turkey carcase off his head, he was just trying to keep it away from the other basenjis. I had to sit down on the floor I laughed so hard. this was before the days of camcorders so all we got was one still picture of Jet with a "turkey head". I sent it in to one of the dog magazines but they did not print it, they said it was "too contrived". Obviously they did not know anything about basenjis. Basenjis will not do anything if it is not their idea.

The Validity of the Dogs in Elk Story

Since publishing the pumpkin version of the Dogs in Elk story, I've received dozens of e-mails from people curious about the story's validity. I've also received e-mail from Anne Verchick, owner of the "real" dogs in elk.

I've never seen the dogs myself, and I've as yet to see a picture of the actual event, but here are some snippets of what Annie had to say. She sent me this 10/28/99:

After a couple of e-mail volleys, I finally mustered up the nerve to ask Annie to attest to the validity of the story. She wrote back:

Rob,

Sure, I can attest. I mean, I can tell you that it really did happen. I can ask a couple of people who stopped by to admire the whole scene to get in touch with you, or give you their email addresses and phone numbers.

Does that help at all? I think that it's easy for me to lose track of how atypical my dog experiences are, in some ways, because like everyone else, what I compare the world to is my experience.

The thing about the dogs in elk thing is this - with the dogs I have, especially Gus Pong, who is a New Guinea Singing Dog, and a complete freak of primitive dogdom, dogs in elk is in some ways a fairly minor event, in that it involved fewer people than usual. Sharing a house with a very primitive, deeply attached and wildly inspired animal has led me into all sorts of situations I never anticipated as a pet owner.

How dogs in elk began is a little odd, without considerable history - ignore now, if you're not interested. Gus Pong is a New Guinea Singing Dog - currently, they are classified as a subspecies of Dingo, but what they look like is a cross between a German Shepherd and a Shiba Inu. And he is an incredibly fussy eater. In the highlands, they live as semi-pariah dogs in the villages, and their primary use is for hunting. So, after being unable to find a commercial dog food that he would eat at all, I contacted local game processors and butchers. I lucked out. I found a really nice guy who was willing to give me (since game can't be sold) trim and bones, which turned out to be something Gus Pong (and my other two dogs, Jake and Stella) thought was just fine. You can see, I am sure, where this is going. They had a rich texan come in, and shoot his tags, and not want the meat. So they did a really rough field dress, and called and asked if I wanted to come pick up about 100 lbs of slabcut elk and so forth. I said sure, and mistakenly put Jake and Gus in the car before driving up. Well, they got out of the car (One of slider windows was cracked, which I didn't realize) and you know the rest.

Marc-Andre Laporte, 59, was found guilty of two counts of animal cruelty at the St. Jerome courthouse in Montreal this week, following the seizure of 97 fox terriers in November 2005 from his Blainville puppy mill.
Judge Jean Sirois rejected Laporte's argument that he loved his dogs too much. When police raided the property, they found dogs matted in feces feeding on dogs' carcasses and stronger dogs preying on weaker ones.

Almost 40 animals had to be destroyed. Laporte's home was later condemned and demolished in March 2006. The surviving dogs were cared for by the SPCA and later, with the help of devoted fox terrier lovers, found wonderful foster homes where they have been living for the past 2 years.
Laporte is only facing six months of jail time and up to $4,000 in fines.

On Feb. 22, 2008 he will be sentenced.

At the same hearing, the judge is to decide if Laporte is to get any of his fox terriers back!

WE CANNOT ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN.

The surviving mill fox terriers took months to recover physically, medically and emotionally from their ordeal. To even consider removing ONE wire from the safety and care of their loving foster families back to Laporte is OUTRAGEOUS!

Today we are launching a two-fold campaign to prevent Laporte from getting his dog/s back. We know we can count on you to take action and spread the word:

Once all the signatures are entered, we will print it out and hand it over to Elizabeth Pierce who has been instrumental is saving and caring for the Blainville wires, for distribution to the media (unfortunately it is illegal in Canada to hand petitions to the court).

2: Please take a few minutes to write a letter to Judge Jean Sirois imploring him to prevent Laporte from ever taking possession of his former fox terriers or of owning any dog again. If you can, include a photo of yourself and your foxie/dog. All the letters received will be put in a file and also handed to the media.

Puppy mills face greater scrutiny

On a misty night in October, dogs by the dozens — some heavily pregnant, some nursing puppies — were placed in crates and carted to waiting vehicles. By dawn, 179 Chihuahuas, poodles, beagles and other breeds had been removed from a Bland County, Va., barn and readied for transport by Best Friends Animal Society to a care center in New York.

Weeks earlier, Maine authorities seized 249 ailing purebred dogs and puppies, including Shelties, pugs and German shepherds, from a windowless barn in rural Buxton. Neighbors and passersby had no idea dogs lived there.

The 428 dogs — and the litters born almost daily in subsequent weeks — were extracted from a huge industry devoted to high-volume, low-cost puppy production.

Operating under the radar and spreading fast, such operations, commonly referred to as puppy mills, have now moved into the crosshairs of welfare groups and animal lovers.

"Many people believe that (puppy mills) is an old problem that had been taken care of years ago," says Stephanie Shain of the Humane Society of the United States. "Even people who pay attention to animal issues don't understand how much it has grown."

The Humane Society has identified puppy mills as "one of our five top" issues, Shain says. The group is pressing for more stringent oversight and has readied a unit that responds with people and equipment to large seizures, as in the Maine case, for which local agencies don't have the necessary resources.

Ed Sayres, president of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), calls mills "one of the most offensive forms of animal cruelty" and says his group will continue to push for "stronger dog breeding regulations" and consumer awareness.

The Humane Society estimates that at least 10,000 U.S. puppy mills, most of them unlicensed and unmonitored, are producing up to 4 million puppies a year. "That's about twice as many as in the mid-'90s," says the ASPCA's Bob Baker, who has investigated such mills since 1980.

The spike, experts say, is the result of a confluence of factors: sales over the Internet, where some fictional Web pages emphasize home breeding and country surroundings; a major drift toward breeding by many in Amish and Mennonite families, who sell puppies at flea markets or to brokers who supply pet stores; and a recent surge of factory-style breeding in Maine, Ohio and other states previously not regarded as puppy-mill areas.

Often, Baker says, "they're keeping breeding stock in squalid, horrible conditions for their entire short lives and producing unhealthy, substandard puppies with genetic, behavior and psychological issues." And that, he says, makes this not only an issue of "inhumane care" but also of consumer fraud.

Some puppy mills are small operations: 20 or so breeding dogs live in basements, garages or sheds "in cages stacked to the roof," and remain there, without exercise or sunlight, having two litters a year until they "wear out" at about age 5, Shain says. Others are huge. Hundreds of dogs producing thousands of puppies live in relative darkness and without stimulation so they rarely bark and attract attention.

In either case, the breeder dogs get little or no medical care, experts say. Most of the females are dissipated from the endless cycle of producing and nursing litters; many have chronic ailments, rotten teeth, and ear, eye and skin infections.

"You can just imagine how healthy and well-adjusted puppies born of these animals are," Shain says. They have a high incidence of genetic disorders and diseases, and problems that emerge months or years after purchase, she says.

Females that no longer produce large litters are "let loose in the fields," killed or starved to death or sold at auctions where for $20 to $200 other millers buy them to get one more litter, or research facilities take them, Shain says.

The Kanab, Utah-based Best Friends purchased the Virginia dogs, says general counsel Russ Mead, after learning the Amish breeder, unwilling to install upgrades the county demanded after a March fire killed nearly 200 of his animals, intended to auction them.

The breeder, Ivan Schmucker Jr., told the Roanoke Times the decision to sell the dogs was hard for his family. "It's not that easy to walk away from it," he told the newspaper. "We don't feel very popular."

Eilene Ribbens Rohde, who heads The Wisconsin Puppy Mill Project, which is pressing for state oversight, is concerned that consumers might think tales of puppy-mill horrors are exaggerated. So her group bought 80 of 240 puppy mill dogs auctioned in March and documented their ailments.

"Two were OK," says Rohde, an Elkhart Lake innkeeper who became an activist after buying a hopelessly damaged Dalmatian at the mall. All the other auction dogs had "some malady or multiple issues," including conjunctivitis, parasites, cysts, staph infection, hernia, heart murmur, heartworm, yeast infections, ear mites and brucellosis, a bacterial infection that can cause flulike symptoms in humans.

Two were euthanized. The rest were treated and adopted. "Most are doing quite well," she says.

Only a fraction of the nation's high-volume breeding operations are USDA-licensed and subjected to occasional inspections. A few states have passed laws to have more oversight over puppy mills.

The Maine seizure came after consumers complained puppies purchased from J'aime Kennel arrived sick, says Norma Worley, director of the state's animal welfare program. After officers were allegedly denied access and a puppy with giardia was sold, officers moved in for "failure to provide medical treatment," she says.

Most of the dogs had mange, ringworm or diarrhea; some had respiratory illness or uterine infections; many had multiple ailments. Worley estimates $300,000 of state funds has been spent on the animals so far, most for medical treatment.

The dogs may be in the state's care for several months until the breeders' case is heard in court, or a judge may order them placed in shelters for adoption.

As for the dogs Best Friends took from Dogwood Kennels, adoptions will begin as soon as they're healthy.

Janie's today

Janie is still at the vet's office in Wauchula Florida - love the name of that town! They were doing some ultrasounds and scans and stuff.

They've been feeding her her special food in the wet form - and boy she has been pooping out stuff and stuffins and stuffies!

Last night Mommy and I were hanging out on Janie's beddie in the living room. Janie has a big white furry kitty she brought with her - this thing is bigger than her - and she would curl up next to Big Kittie for naps. Mommy grabbed Big Kittie to hug it, when she found 3 - count them 3 - half eaten stuffies that were still wet with spit! Janie's stash - and now we know what she is pooping out.

We all love Janie, but things are changing. Mommy and Daddy had a big big talk with crying and stuff - you know the real serious kind. They have decided that is best for Janie to go to a new foster home. There is a real nice lady in Central Florida who specializes in training terriers. We took care of the loving, kissing, making her feel like a truly loved lil princess who LOVES you-mans and petties and stuff - now this lady can take care of training her; like in potty training, and not eating all kinds of stuff even if it will kill you kinda stuff.

Then Janie will be the perfect pet and will find the perfect furever home. Maybe even with you?

Now she just has to get better...special lovins to Janie, okay?

Heya doggies! Thank you everydoggie and you-man so so much for showing love for little Janie!

Daddy drove Janie on a long truck ride yesterday to the vet's office. She slept on the front seat with her head across the armrest so her nose was touching Daddy's arm the whole way. When Janie hopped down out of the truck when they finally got there, Daddy said she took the longest pee he had ever seen! Guess she held it the whole way - so I guess maybe now she is house trained?

The vet you-mans called Mommy to find out exactly what was wrong and when and all that stuff - then they got to work doing tons of test and panels and that kind of stuff.

The preliminary results from one test show it is not her pancreas. This test is not always conclusive and we have to wait on the results of all the other tests cuz they had to be sent out for results.

Mommy spoke with the vets office again this morning. She is so worried about her! She especially doesn't know how Janie will react in a situation like this, away from home with strange you-mans. They said she has been fine to deal with. Whoosh yay!

Her poopies are firmer, but still black. As a matter of fact she chewed up a blankie last night and is pooping that out now too!

Today Janie gets her ultrasound and more scans of her body so they can find out exactly what is wrong with her.

Let's all send Janie sweet thoughts, virtual petties and kissies. Make her feel like she is not all alone there, she just loves to have her family around and is always underpaw around the house. I know she can feel it!

The Tale of the Toy Basket

I am a terrier. Terriers tug. We like tug games, none of this fetch, or ball playing. At least, that's what I thought until I met this green ball....

It was the squeaker that got me first, dragging me into ball obsession....

Chewing and squeaking non-stop....

Bringing them to the big bed with me so I could squeak them when I woke up in the middle of the night....

Frantically searching for it if I became seperated from it....

Then I moved onto the bigger stuff....

Squeaking and squeaking and squeaking until the squeakers died....

Then a new one would get thrown into the mix reminding me that the dead ones used to squeak and exciting me all over again....

Then I became a chew fanatic....

Chewing and chewing and chewing and chewing....

Until my family staged an intervention - they say its for my own good....

No more for me, now I have a hard rubber ball and somehow it's just not the same....

Mommy was freaking out when she went to take us out for our walkies - bees were swarming in our back porch!!!!

My Mommy is really allergic to bee stings and has to go to the hospital or she'll die if she gets stung - so she was screaming and Daddy ran out and killed them!

He has some great killer spray and boom they were dead!

When they built our house they thought it would be nice and rustic to leave the knot holes in the wood on the outside porch walls.

Well the bees made a hive in there and last night Mommy and Daddy snuck out there when the bees were sleeping and covered the holes with duct tape.

But look they didn't cover it all up!

Nasty bees GO AWAY!!!!!!!

1) I hate sharing (that was easy cuz I already said it!)

2) I have become a ball obsessive maniac. There, I've said it.

3) I was 2 years old when I was rescued and I was such a non-stop bad dog Mommy wanted to give me back but Daddy said no.

4) I am the only boy-dog in the whole world NOT in love with Sunshie. We are just good friends.

5) I HATE being brushed and turn into a snarly growly snappy biting monster.

6) I have the cujones to be a big dog, I am just "vertically challenged".

Mommy took a ride up to our other house last week and wanted to share this photo. It is Lovebug season - she had to stop every 30 minutes to clean off the windshield! They make love while flying and it is their mating season - she musta killed thousands of them! Everytime she pulled in somewhere to clean off the car the lizards swarmed up on the grill to eat all the dead bugs!

About Casper

Casper is suffering from Evans Syndrome which is a combination of Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia and Autoimmune Thrombocytopenia. There are conditions wherein his red blood cells and platelets are being destroyed by his own immune system. Last year, when he was first diagnosed, Casper underwent 3 blood transfusions and 1 oxyglobin transfusion to keep him alive and spent more than a week in the hospital. Through it all, he kept showing everyone his strong will to fight this disease even when multiple doctors had suggested he be put to sleep. Trooper that he is, he fought back.

And after almost a year on a cocktail of medicines, he was able to become stable enough to Casper Valentinereturn to most of his activities like playing and walking. He was weaned off the drugs because of their bad side effects, one of which was Cushings disease which he developed because of the extended steroid use.

But after only a few months off the medication, he collapsed and his gums turned white again. We took him to the emergency room and found he that had relapsed. He is now back on all his old medication and on some new ones as well.

He is such a wonderful soul and brings happiness to everyone who sees his pictures, reads his stories or meets him in person. We are all rooting for him so that hopefully he will be able to beat this disease again.

Good bye to the original dog blogger, I knew your blog well. Please go visit Nigel's blog and read the full tribute by his sister, Gimlet, his editor in chief. I have reprinted a portion of it here to share with all of you.

As Fate Would Have It

An iconoclast with class

Nigel Prescott, American-born statesdog, philosopher, adventurer, essayist, barrister, mixologist, canine behaviorist, pioneering dog blogger and ball player (he sometimes went by "Shoeless Nige") died Saturday, April 28, 2007 in his doggie dad's arms at a veterinary clinic in Palm Harbor, Florida.
He died of complications from living an extremely long and happy life.
He was somewhere between 15-and-a-half or 17.
Nigel was timeless, but he was not ageless.

This unassuming wire who was probably born to a back yard breeder in Brooklyn used his sharp intelligence and charm to overcome any obstacle Fate threw at him. He lived to a great old age and remained independent up to his final moments.

He leaves behind his loving parents, his younger sister (me), Joe the Cat (who always showed him much kindness), a foster brother, foster parents, grandmother and aunt and his friends. He asked that he be mourned for a suitable time, but no longer.
Nigel insisted that after some time has passed we resume Mr. Doodle's Dog. The cataracts now fallen from his eyes, he sees very plainly that there is room for an astral canine blogger and yes, there are interviews to be had with fellow scribes Kurt Vonnegut and David Halberstam ... and their dogs.
He further insists that we not forget Eugene O'Neill. The playwright who gave us this entry deserves a post or two.

There are no second acts, but there is still a bit of Nigel if we only look for him.

Well, the rents have been doing tons of stuff. Fortunately, they take me with them sometimes.

We went to the beach the other day and took Janie with us. It was her first time ever seeing beach and it was funny!

To get to the beach, you have to walk down steep wooden steps. Well, I don't think Janie had ever seen steps before....she stood there and wouldn't move! Mommy made me go up and down a coupla times just to show her how it's done, and she finally climbed down.. And when I say climbed down, well, it was like she had to reach out each paw and balance it on the step very carefully!

Then we got to the sand....something else Janie had never seen! She was walking real slow over it, trying to figure out if it would eat her or something I guess. I just ran circles around her, and rolled around in the sand, but she didn't relax and copy me.

The water really scared her. She planted her hiney plop in the sand and would NOT MOVE!!!! THAT'S WHEN WE LEFT AND BOY WAS IT FUNNY WATCHING HER TRY TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO CLIMB BACK UP!

This Sunday it was raining. Mommy took me for a ride in the convertible with the top down..did you know that if you don't stop you don't get wet? We ran a few red lights to keep from testing the theory. We actually drove north for about an hour before we turned around and headed back southbound. It does work both ways!!!!

It was nice to have rain finally, we are having a real bad drought here in the Floribbean. Not enough rain to make much of a difference though, too bad. The creek behind our house is a little bit wet on the bottom thanks to the rain - it was dry. But that wet only means mosquitos!

Oh, and a bird made a nest in our mailbox. Mommy opened it yesterday and the bird flew out - he even pecked her on the face! I was up the driveway with Daddy and we saw the whole thing. Luckily Mommy wasn't hurt, just startled. I wanted to chase that bird but Daddy wouldn't let me.

Oh, and I got a cyber peemail from my sweet sweet Lucy in Australia. And I thought she had forgotten me. Sigh.

Guess what we saw?

We have company staying, and you know how that is - you take them out to see "the sights" - all those things you have seen a million times before.

Today we went to see Manatees.

They also call them sea cows

You can't really see them cuz they're under the water

But you can see their noses when they come up to breathe.

They are HUGE and you can see their shadows under the water

They make snarky low sounds when they breathe. Everybody calls them gentle giants cuz they are so nice. Some people even swim with them!

You guys still there?

They travel together and you see a few at a time

Wow I can really see that nose!

They move slow and are in the warmer parts of the waterways. Sometimes you see they have scars on them from boat propellers. They have laws here to protect them, and slow speed zones where they hang out. But some you-mans are a**holes and don't listen. (Like we didn't know that already!)

AMERICAN ROTTWEILER CLUB INVITES YOU...

ANTI-CANINE LEGISLATION CHALLENGE

11 March 2007

The American Rottweiler Club, Inc (ARC) has stepped up and is taking action to fight against the anti-canine legislation that is sweeping the country.

ARC hereby challenges any dog club in the United States, be it conformation or working, to become pro-active in protecting the right to freely own and maintain ALL breeds.

THE CHALLENGE

Any club that is willing to donate a table/booth and a volunteer to anti-canine legislation at their event, ARC will supply ALL necessary materials at NO COST, including but not limited to the loan of a 2 X 8 red vinyl banner for display, full color brochures, with all shipping/mailing fees prepaid.

The subjects of anti-canine legislation included in the educational material are:

1.. Certain forms of mandatory spay and neuter
2.. The reasons to fear the term guardian
3.. Breed specific legislation (by breed, group or weight)
4.. Prohibitions against ear cropping and tail docking
5.. Insurance discrimination against homeowners based on breed.

All ARC requires from any club participating in this event is to obtain and place a donation jar or can on their table to help maintain this as a free project. There will be wraps provided for the donation jars also at no charge.

Various products are available at a minimal cost if the event-giving club wishes to sell merchandise to further the educational effort. Any profits from the sale of merchandise may be retained by your clubs anti-canine legislation fund or forwarded to ARC anti-canine legislation fund. These products are not promoted through ARC, they are sold through a private enterprise. Additional information is available on request via contact information below.

FAQ:

1. How far in advance must the club request to participate?

The event-giving club should notify its intention to participate as soon as possible to reserve their banner.

2. What if the banner gets damaged during use?

The event-giving club is responsible for replacement cost.

3. How many brochures will be sent?

This will vary according to the size and type of the event, minimum being 75.

4. We are holding a specialty and our club creates exhibitor packets, can the brochures be used in this manner?

Yes, if you notify the ARC contact, brochures can be sent for this purpose

5. What if we do not use all of our brochures?

ARC would appreciate if you would return them with your banner so we can use them for another event.

6. Where do we send the donation jar monies?

All donation jar monies can be sent via a single check or money order made payable to ARC Legislation Fund and sent along with the return of the banner.

7. Our club wishes to be more active and would like to sell merchandise.

So long as a donation jar is readily visible on the table to help keep this project free, we encourage your club to do all you can in this fight.

Yes I am still alive

I must apologize to all my bloggie doggie buddies.....for my, well, my Mom's.....being too busy to help me blog. It is high season here in Palm Beach and Mommy had made promises and commitments she had to keep (remember she cannot say no) (it's for charity), and her old office kept calling her and begging her to come back so she did (remember she cannot say no) (they needed her), and we are fostering Janie the Painie (remember she cannot say no) (Janie needed us)....and Daddy may as well not have opposing thumbs when it comes to computers....

I miss you all SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know I have Janie the Painie now, but - just between us - she just ain't you guys!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, on to the inevitable - Janie the Painie.

It's been what, 3 weeks? Already? Wow! Simba, you are right, time does fly!

Janie is - well - she is learning to be a dog. Janie was rescued from a puppymill, they think she is about 2.5 years old and had 2 or 3 litters of puppies. She was kept in a cage all the time, and they must've beat her and stuff cuz she is so afraid of everybody. Except me. She follows me everywhere!!!!!!

She had already learned to play with toys before she came. And she came with 2 HUGE BAGS OF TOYS!!!! And she shares! Stupid girl....

Janie is afraid of everybody, even Mommy! She runs away really fast whenever someone approaches, or if she is walking somewhere and sees someone. She is getting a little bit better everyday though, and now will sneak up to Mommy and give her a sniff and a lick before she runs away, and she doesn't run away as far.

We started out with the garage as Janie's "place" (it's carpeted), and had her bed, some toys and her food out there. It became her "safe place" and she would lay on her bed and let Mommy come up to her and pet her there. Then she got a second safe place, now she has 3 safe places. She really wants Mommy to pet her and stuff, and will run away from her to one of her safe places so Mommy can pet her, pick her up and carry her to the big bed or to watch tv on Mommy lap in the TV room.

Janie loves the big bed, but she cannot get up on the furniture herself. We think it's cuz she needs to develop her muscles more from being in that cage all the time. Mommy will lift her up there and she even acts like a normal dog up there! She plays, and cuddles, and licks face and stuff - but she still will get spooked sometimes. 3 days ago she started getting up onto the sofa in the living room by herself (not as big a jump as the big bed) and she acts like a normal dog up there, too.

Janie doesn't know how to walk on a leash, so after the first night dragging her Mommy put the gentle lead on her. It worked right away!!!! She walks fine with it, but she doesn't really know that walkies are for pee poops.....so she has to wear fancy pants in the house. Hahahahahaha! Mommy says she has to do it this way, cuz how can you potty train a dog you cannot reprimand? When she DOES pee poop on our walkies Mommy pets her and tells her how good she is. I guess Janie will get the hang of it eventually.

When we are out on our walkies, if Mommy has to raise her arm even a little to adjust for me (I tangle her up) Janie cringes and flattens to the ground like Mommy is gonna hit her. If Mommy doesn't hit me - she will never hit anybody!

Janie has to eat special food, cuz her digestive system has to get on track. At that awful place she was at they cut her food with sawdust to save money. She has a hard time now and gets pancreitis attacks if she eats fats. This sucks cuz I get so many less treats, but her food is REAL GOOD and I get fed it too so she doesn't steal stuff she can't have.

Everytime Mommy leaves the house, Janie starts crying, then barking, then baying and keeps it up for over an hour. She does this when Daddy and I leave every morning for our beach drive, too. This is getting a little bit better, too.

When Mommy comes home, Janie and I greet her. Janie hangs back, afraid, but really wants pets and stuff. Little by little she is getting better, and actually comes up and snuffles Mommy's hand now, then backs off a little and play bows and barks, and barks!

Janie is even starting to let Daddy into her space a little!

The whole house is just littered with toys - and stuffins - it is heaven! I should be a decorator. Mommy came home with a BIG basket today for all the toys, and I shovelled my nose in there and played toy toss!!!!

So, the Bussie Jury is still out on this whole Janie thing. I will keep you all updated - I promise! And I will post pictures even!
